Shopify vs Shopee: Which One Should You Choose?

If you’re selling online for the first time, start with Shopee.

But if you already run a business, perhaps with a physical store, and simply want to add another sales channel, Shopify may be the better choice.

The two platforms serve very different purposes.

Shopee: An Online Mall With Existing Traffic

Shopee is like a shopping mall that already has foot traffic. You don’t need to build your own website or be great at marketing from day one.

For beginners, its biggest advantage is the low barrier to entry. People are already browsing the platform for products, making it easier to launch and test what sells.

However, competition on Shopee is becoming increasingly intense. Customers often compare sellers mainly on price, while platform fees, advertising costs, and promotional campaigns can gradually reduce your profit margins.

Over time, many sellers realise they’re building their business around the platform’s traffic instead of building a brand they truly own.

Shopify: Your Own Branded Store

Shopify, on the other hand, is more like creating your own branded online store. You have greater control over your website design, customer experience, and brand identity.

Although you’ll need to generate your own traffic and handle your own marketing, Shopify gives you more freedom in the long run. The transaction cost per product can also be lower than selling through Shopee.

But there’s one common misunderstanding: launching a Shopify store doesn’t automatically bring in orders.

The real challenge isn’t opening the store. It’s whether you’re ready to seriously invest in building your brand and attracting customers.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

Here’s my take:

  • If you’re selling for the first time, Shopee is usually the easier place to start.
  • If you already have products, existing customers, or an established offline business, Shopify is often the better choice for long-term growth.

In fact, many established brands eventually use both.
